Fall family photography sessions are a favorite around here. We love the late afternoon light and casual clothes which allow everyone to relax and have fun. One of our favorite tricks is to catch kids playing games for the camera (if they're old enough). That carefree feeling of being a barefoot kid in the park is refreshing for us grownups and it gives the kids permission to be silly. So, to re-cap: Schedule your family photo session in the late afternoon (or early morning) for the best light. Secondly, wear casual clothes for that natural "lifestyle" look, like we're showing here. And lastly, call early for the best date and time. The first cool weekend triggers an avalanche of calls at most Dallas area photography studios and you may not be able to get a Saturday appointment. Weekdays are a little easier for us, so if you have a flexible schedule, consider an after school or early evening appointment and you may have better luck getting on the calendar.
And when you're planning your portrait wall -- be sure to add a couple of black and white options. It's an absolute classic that you will never tire of. Especially if you're not sure you want BRIGHT green grass as a background color in your portraits. Sidewalks and leaves add those neutral earthy tones that call attention to skin, hair and eyes so nicely -- where sometimes green grass only adds strong color and can detract. And don't forget to add a few standing shots that will flatter any of the members of your family that may have gained a little weight since last year's fall portraits. They'll thank you for it!
Happy Fall, everyone!
