I recently read this article by Mat Honan of WIRED. He was hacked! It's everyone's horror story, but especially tragic because Mat is a parent.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone how easily digital images can be lost or damaged. Don't forget to burn a CD, make prints, and save these precious memories in more than one place -- preferrably off site. Remember all those newscasts of families being interviewed after their homes had burned down or washed away by a flood? What do they ALWAYS miss the most? That's right. The family photos. Find a close relative and ask them to swap with you! You store their back-up CDs and ask them, in turn, to store yours. Or get a safety deposit box. It's the only way to be absolutely sure they're safe.
Here's an excerpt from Mat's article:
"In many ways, this was all my fault. My accounts were daisy-chained together. Getting into Amazon let my hackers get into my Apple ID account, which helped them get into Gmail, which gave them access to Twitter. Had I used two-factor authentication for my Google account, it’s possible that none of this would have happened, because their ultimate goal was always to take over my Twitter account and wreak havoc. Lulz.
Had I been regularly backing up the data on my MacBook, I wouldn’t have had to worry about losing more than a year’s worth of photos, covering the entire lifespan of my daughter, or documents and e-mails that I had stored in no other location"
